I might have done a post like this before but honestly I’m too lazy to check. Even if I have my process has changed a bit and I wanted to talk about it.
When it comes to blog posts I google or Pinterest ideas for topics. I have some ideas of what I want to do but to be honest, trying to come up with topics for posting three times a week (12 posts in a month) the well runs dry sometimes. I have found a lot of good topics and some I even tweak a little to fit me or my audience. I also keep a list and it evolves over time. When I finally sit down to write a post I either will talk about what is on my mind or I answer the question of the topic I found.
Finding new topics is a fun challenge though. It gets me thinking and it can sometimes change my perspective on something I thought I knew. For blog posts I don’t really have a set way of writing. I just write. I go back and change things as I go and when I’m done, I’m done. I try not to think too long about it or spend too much time writing it because this is something I do for fun. I want to keep it as easy as possible and feel like I have to over do it. The friendships I’ve made doing this has become more of a reason to keep doing this than trying to push information.
When it comes to writing short stories I of course do things differently. First I get inspiration for the story, whether it’s from another story I heard or a dream I have or if my imagination is in a particular, crazy mood. I take a tiny idea and push it around in my mind and see if anything comes of it. Then I start writing. I don’t ever know where it’ll go until I start writing. It develops on it’s own. I just write until I get a firm grasp on where it’s going then I go back and fix it to feel cohesive and functional.
When I write novels, which I’m still working on, I think a little harder on it. I get the idea and I outline. I have to have a clear outline. It’s not like writing a short story where it can just go where it wants. I have to keep a guideline or the story can get away from me. I go one stage at a time. I try to go in order because again, the story will get away from me if I don’t. Sometimes I have to take a break and write a scene for the middle or the end. It helps to give me ideas when I feel stuck. I have a novel that I’ve been working on for a couple years now and it’s taking a while because I procrastinate something horrible. Hopefully I can get back on it soon.
I hope this post gave you some insight to how I do what I do. For the writers out there: what is your writing process? How do you stay motivated and get the writing done?
