I’ve had a few memorable Valentine’s days, one being the cringiest of them all. I don’t want to talk about it. It’s still really embarrassing.
In an article I read from npr.org, the origins of Valentine’s day were actually kind of…dark. Men would hit women with bloody animal pelts to “make them fertile” and they would pull women’s names from jars to procreate with over the holiday. You can read the whole article here.
My husband and I have never done anything big or crazy for Valentine’s day. We go to dinner but that’s about it. We gave each other gifts before but we don’t really feel it’s necessary to get each other gifts anymore. We just feel like it’s all a little silly. Our anniversary is more important and more of a celebration of love for us.
The anniversary of when we first said I love you is a week after Valentine’s day so we also like to celebrate that over Valentine’s. That’s actually a cute story. I was living with a friend at the time, since I had moved out of my ex-husband’s house, and it was about 10:30 at night. I was in bed talking to Marc on the phone and we both had to be up at 4:00 the next morning for work but we just kept talking on the phone anyway. I wanted to tell him I loved him but I didn’t want to tell him over the phone so he got up and drove thirty minutes to my house so we could say I love you in person. I don’t remember what time we finally went to sleep but I was so happy. Ever since we’ve remembered that day and we’ll be celebrating seven years of I love you’s this year.
Do you celebrate Valentine’s day? How do you celebrate?
